I work in a supermarket chain in New Zealand. I feel that I am working up the ladder. I'm only a young bloke but I have more responsibility than others that are older than me. Subtly showing that you are worthy of the next raise is the key. Thanks!

From my experience open plan can very distracting either people keep interrupting you, or you can't talk openly as everyone can hear your conversation which is really off putting. I was reading the paper and came across this article, and it seems a lot of people feel the same way - see http://www.smh.com.au/executive-style/management/sardine-rage-rules-in-the-shrinking-office-20110302-1bemg.html?goback=.gde_143940_member_45721197

There's no way you can be productive with interruptions and distractions. It's just not possible. But then many people enjoy the social aspect of work more than the actual work itself, so of course they would prefer the office environment.

Absolutely environment impacts productivity; it's a no-brainer. I live in the UK, and more and more firms are more than happy to allow their staff to work from home / other environments, and just to come in to the office for necessary meetings. The first thing this achieves is giving trust back to employees, which massively boosts morale, in turn increasing productivity. This is besides the obvious: that you can just focus on the task at end, without the same interruptions. In fact, I read in a BBC 'Focus' article recently that within 20 years or so, nearly everyone will work remotely, hours will be completely flexible (people often working evenings, and using the daytime for other pursuits), and workers will convene in office / cafe set-ups for essential meetings etc. I know for sure we'll see the traditional way of working change... It can't not the way technology has changed, and the direction in which it's heading.

Hello Mark- just to say I still find your comments as inspiring as I did the first time I met you at Warwick Uni. I graduated last year with a first, and found a job 1.2 through the course, in which I am certainly not a passenger!I heard a comment the other day which I thought you might like and could use if you have not heard it before - the difference between a try and triumph is umph! Thanks and all the best, Judith

Yes, behavior repeats itself. Behavior is already a part of your character. No one can change it but you. Dealing with people like what you have stated above, is difficult, of course, but you may want to share your positivity to start a change.

Totally agree with you. Once we have decided on something, whether it became a success or failure, it will never be to difficult to make decisions again.
